The MTCF Query Tool City View Visualization is an interactive focused view of crash problems in specific Michigan city regions. The isualization supports additional context by adding various related datasets.

City View Regions

A City View "Region" is a contiguous area around one or more cities. The currently supported regions are:

Datasets

The following datasets are supported contexts in the visual. Please note that not all datasets apply to all regions:

Pedestrian Beacons

Pedestrian beacon information is extracted from Model Inventory of Roadway Elements Fundamental Data Elements (MIRE FDE) dataset maintained by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) within the US Department of Transportation. The information available in MIRE FDE depends on the type of road, with non-local paved roads having the most data and unpaved roads having the least. For the City View tool, UMTRI extracted crossings that were marked as having pedestrian hybrid beacons or flashing beacons. Information on these types of beacons are provided by FHWA on their ?Proven Safety Countermeasures? website (links: hybrid beacons and flashing beacons).

Child Care Locations

Information on child care locations was provided by the Michigan Bureau of Community and Health Systems (BCHS) which licenses child care providers. The City View tool displays the locations of child care services reported to the BCHS.

Bar and Liquor Stores

Bars and liquor stores were identified from an extract of the 2024 business directory maintained by Data Axle. For the City View tool, UMTRI identified locations where drinking or alcohol sales would be a primary element of the business. This was done using the primary Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for the business. The following primary SIC codes were selected for inclusion: Bar, Cocktail Lounge, Night Club, Pub, Comedy Club, Night Club, Karaoke Club, Cocktail Mixes, Liquors, Wines, Beer & Ale, Cordials, Daiquiri, Tasting Rooms.

Marijuana Dispensaries

Marijuana dispensaries were identified from an extract of the 2024 business directory maintained by Data Axle. For the City View tool, UMTRI identified dispensaries using the primary Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for the business. SIC code 599308 is used by Data Axle to identify marijuana-related businesses.

Primary and Secondary Schools

Primary and secondary schools were identified from an extract of the 2024 business directory maintained by Data Axle. For the City View tool, UMTRI identified these schools using the primary Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for the business.

Senior Housing Locations

Senior housing and care facilities were identified from an extract of the 2024 business directory maintained by Data Axle. For the City View tool, UMTRI identified relevant locations using the primary Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for the business. The following primary SIC codes were selected for inclusion: Homes-Adult, Residential Care Homes,  Adult Congregate Living Facilities, Community Care Facilities-Adult Care,  Senior Citizens Housing, Residential Care.

Theaters, Arena, & Concert Venues

Theaters, arenas, and concert venues were identified from an extract of the 2024 business directory maintained by Data Axle. For the City View tool, UMTRI identified relevant locations using the primary Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for the business. The following primary SIC codes were selected for inclusion: Theater-Live, Concert Venue, Amphitheaters, Stadiums Arenas & Athletic Fields, Auditoriums.

Transit Stops

Locations of bus and light rail stops were collected from databases available on the Mobility Database. For each of the supported agencies, the most recently provided dataset was collected to best reflect the current level of service available. The Mobility Database included information from the following transportation agencies/providers: Ann Arbor Transit Authority, Amtrack, Bay Area Transit Authority, Capital Area Transit Authority, Detroit-Ann Arbor Express, Detroit Department of Transportation, Kalamazoo Metro Transit Authority, Marquette County Transit Authority, Mass Transportation Flint, People Mover, QLine, SMART, The Rapid, University of Michigan Transportation.

Bicycle Lanes

Information on bicycle lanes was collected from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). OSM is an open-source database of roadway information where members of the public can provide information about the facilities available. As such, OSM data are more complete in areas with larger populations and where more people contribute information to the database. The dataset maintained by SEMCOG is an official list of bicycle lanes, however coverage is limited to seven counties in southeast Michigan: Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne.

Sidewalks

Information on sidewalks was provided by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). The dataset maintained by SEMCOG is an official list of paved sidewalks, however coverage is limited to seven counties in southeast Michigan: Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne.

Crosswalks

Information on crosswalks was provided by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). The dataset maintained by SEMCOG is an official list of crosswalks, however coverage is limited to seven counties in southeast Michigan: Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne.

Opportunity Zones

Opportunity zones are Census tracts that receive tax incentives to induce business investments. Opportunity zones were established by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the program is overseen by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Michigan has 288 Opportunity Zones. Public Parks

Information on public parks was collected from the ParkServe database maintained by the Trust for Public Lands.

Social Vulnerability Index

The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was created by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to reflect the ability of communities to respond to hazards and public health emergencies. The SVI has four components reflecting socioeconomic status, household characteristics, racial and ethnic minority status, and housing and transportation. The City View tool presents the SVI as a percentile with larger values indicating communities with greater degrees of vulnerability. More information on the SVI can be found on the CDC website.

National Walkability Index

The National Walkability Index was developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency. It reflects the impact of density, land use, and proximity to transportation on walkability for Census block groups throughout the US. The index is a 20-point scale, with larger values indicating greater walkability. More information is available on the EPA website.
